| Members of the Amateur Radio Society
of Dryden participated in the "Pinewood School Student Survival Night"
held on Friday May 13 2011. Radio Communications Networks were established
to demonstrate to students the role Amateur Radio can play during emergencies
when regular means of communications can become disrupted or congested.
As well as a local area communications
network a wide-area network was established both on IRLP and HF and communications
were established between Dryden and the Provincial Emergency Operations
Centre located in Toronto.
Woody Linton VE3JJA from SIOUX NARROWS
was linked into the networks and assisted by providing relays on HF to
the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (VE3EMO) station operated by
Jim VA3KU, band conditions on HF were very noisy and the QRP station at
the school could not be heard in Toronto.
Message from Bob Ernwein VE3YDN
A quick note to thank you once again
for the help with the "Pinewood School Student Survival Night", as well
as many thanks to Woody VE3JJA for his participation through out the event,
and of course thanks to our A.R.S.D. (Amateur Radio Society of Dryden)
members....Scott VA3EXT, Bryan VA3BRY, Ken VE3VGM, Del VE3DEL, Arn
VA3NOL, Rick VA3RGA, & Ron VA3RTP, and Reagan Breeze, Emergency
& Education Officer with the Dryden Fire Service for allowing us to
participate in this event.
Have attached a few pics of our somewhat
impromptu set up, we used a Yeasu FT-817 ND QRP H.F at the site as
well as other VHF portable & Hand Helds, computers, monitors, vehicles
(H.F. Dipole support) and power supply/battery bank for the operating &
standby power needs.
We had our VE3EOD command post located
at the Dryden Fire Service Hall on stand by for message handling, but found
it to be somewhat handicapped for H.F. work, will have to fine tune this
glitch !
